Beyond the Las Vegas Strip: Old Vegas and Red Rock Canyon

It can feel like the entire city of Las Vegas revolves around the Strip if you never venture beyond that neon-lit corridor. But there’s plenty to see and do once you step off Las Vegas Boulevard. You can find a taste of Old Vegas on Fremont Street, where vintage signs and showgirls crowned with headdresses recall the days of Sinatra and Martin. Beginning at dusk, a canopy of more than 12 million LED lights erupts in a psychedelic light-and-music show every hour. For an aerial view, zoom down the center of Fremont Street on a zipline.

Nature puts on its own show at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, a landscape of fiery-red sandstone formations and limestone cliffs just 17 miles outside the city. Motor down the 13-mile scenic drive or ditch the car and strike out on any of more than 20 hiking trails that course through the region’s otherworldly topography.

Horrific birthday experience I am writing to express my deep disappointment and concern over the way I was treated during my recent stay at Sahara. What was meant to be a peaceful birthday getaway turned into a distressing experience that left me feeling humiliated and discriminated against. Due to a mix-up with my checkout date: an error on the part of my agency. I unknowingly overstayed past the scheduled checkout time. I had stepped out briefly for lunch with a friend, intending to return and possibly extend my stay. However, upon returning, I was met with hostility and suspicion. A staff member at the front desk not only locked me out of my room but also stated that she would need security to accompany me upstairs to retrieve my belongings as if I were a flight risk or attempting to steal. Her tone was rude, condescending, and completely inappropriate. The implication that I might run away to avoid late checkout fees was deeply offensive, especially when I had already expressed willingness to resolve the issue. I cannot help but question whether I was treated this way because I am Black. The way I was approached and accused felt like a clear case of racial profiling, and it left me shaken and angry on what should have been a celebratory day. This experience has ruined what was meant to be my first solo birthday trip, a moment I had been looking forward to. I urge Sahara’s management to investigate this incident seriously, provide appropriate training to staff on respectful and unbiased guest interactions, and ensure that no guest; regardless of background is ever made to feel like a criminal simply for existing in your space. I hope to receive a formal apology and clear information on the steps being taken to address this incident.

Fix the elevators. Wonderfully unique room with really simple accommodations. Was barely in the room since I was at Evolution 2025, the biggest fighting game tournament in the world at the convention center. But the Blanca single bed room is perfect for a single traveler like I. Just wish the elevators worked.
