Running puts one in touch with the body’s delicate workings. A good distance runner recognizes even the slightest twinge in a muscle and knows the damage a long-term injury can do. Christopher Au of Monarch Massage and Bodywork spent more than a decade running for high-school, college, and postcollegiate track teams, and throughout that time, he became well acquainted with all the aches and pains that can afflict a physically active body. These experiences are what originally led him to become a massage therapist, and he keeps them fresh in his mind while soothing injuries and helping patrons decompress. In addition to Swedish- and sports-massage techniques, he uses the Rossiter System—a series of more than 100 two-person stretches that quickly loosen and elongate connective tissues to relieve pain and restore range of motion after setting the world record for hitting your funny bone on stuff. Christopher is also a member of the American Massage Therapy Association.
