National Burger Weekend

Remember Burger Day in NYC? One day just wasn’t enough. Neither was just one city. So we decided to celebrate National Burger Month by featuring 350 top burger destinations across all the country in our first national themed promotion: Burger Weekend.

Burgers are well known for their versatility ability to adapt to their surroundings. Some of the restaurants known for their skillful burger manipulating joining us this weekend are: Kalbi Burger, The Counter, Char Grill, Cheeseburger Baby, and Pop Pub–the new grand opening from the NYC crew behind Pop Burger.

Additionally, because burgers are to be enjoyed with all five senses, we’re giving your eyes a taste with a series of short videos starring eight burger eateries that you can watch HERE.

In conjunction with this special Memorial Day weekend promotion, our G-Team campaign features Not Alone – an organization that provides free and confidential mental health counseling services for veterans and their families affected by post traumatic stress disorder and combat stress.

BlogWorld NYC

Every year in various cities, social media types come together to discuss the world of blogging. Aptly named “BlogWorld”, this conference focuses on how to reach your audience effectively, achieve the most out of your 3-15 paragraph manifestos, and discuss the future of blogging using lasers and wearing tinfoil hats.

$1 Deals in Chicago

Tomorrow, May 20th, we’re celebrating the launch of Groupon Now! by giving Chicago hundreds of $1 deals, all over town, all day long.

A massage? Dollar. A delicious cheese-coated snack at Geja’s? Four quarters. A boat ride? One-hundred pennies–Wait, don’t pay in pennies.

Keep an eye out for Groupon street teams stationed all around the city. They’ll point you in the direction of the closest deal and help you download the app (if you already have the Groupon app, just update to the newest version.)

Got one of these? Access Groupon Now! from your desktop at The $1 deals will cover anything you’re in the mood for and vary by neighborhood. New offers will pop up throughout the day, so be sure to check back to see what’s offered next.

Groupon Now! is a new way to find great local deals that you can buy and use right now. When you enter your location into your browser or mobile app (currently iPhone/Android), you can discover the deals that are happening right around the corner from you.

We know we said we were announcing this surprise on Friday…but we were never good at keeping secrets. We generally open our Christmas presents on Thanksgiving because we can’t stand the suspense.

James Beard Foundation Awards

Thanks to our Editorial maven, Emily Gordon, who’s put together a recap of Groupon’s involvement at the acclaimed James Beard Foundation Awards.

Every day chefs make delicious dishes for Groupon customers (don’t forget to tip on the whole check!), but it’s not every day that we get to wait on some of the world’s coolest chefs. On May 9 at New York’s Lincoln Center, The James Beard Foundation gave out its coveted annual [awards]( This year, there was a new garnish on the platter: We got to [sponsor the event]( And because—as you may have noticed—we’re partial to a certain color, we turned not only the green room but all of Avery Fisher Hall Groupon green.

Oh, and the red carpet. As celebrity chefs strode down the field-like strip, they met our own Dan Jessup, Head of People Strategy, who sported a striking green tie and traded culinary banter with many celebrity chefs including [Marcus Samuelsson](, [Bobby Flay](, and Chicago’s own [Rick Bayless](, just to name a few. Dan only regretted not getting a good quote from Mortimer and Mauve, two natty pigs dressed in tuxedos for the occasion.

Meet a Groupon Employee

Though Groupon culture is best witnessed in person, preferably via moving walkway or tramcar, we’ve asked a few of our eclectic, hard working employees to answer a few questions about what makes them tick.

Name: Lindsay Verstegen

Position: HR/Recruiter

Other Talents: I have a theatre company that I helped found over 4 years ago: The Plagiarists. I write and act for the company (and also take production photos here and there).

I finished performances of a semi-opera which ran over at The Building Stage. The Building Stage, for the record, is my favorite “storefront space” in Chicago. There was singing. There was dancing. It was really special.

I also take photos!

What’s a typical day like for you?

I come in around 8ish and check e-mail and voicemail and open up my notebook. Despite working for a dotcom, I cannot separate from paper. (note: My high school’s mascot was the “Papermaker” so maybe it’s a hometown pride thing, subconsciously.)
I have a to-do list that I craft the night before and see if there is anything that can be done right away. I go through days with an assortment of interviews, phone screens and general resume lookovers. I also try to find time to go on a walk–I think walking is important.

Which movie villain could you beat in a fight?

Gordon Gekko in the movie Wall Street. I would kill him with kindness.

Chicago Surprise on Friday

Chicago is full of surprises and we’re a big fan of spontaneity here at Groupon. We enjoy hearing about our customers trying new restaurants and adventures on a day to day basis. Because we love surprises that don’t involve scorpions in our shoes, we’re fired up to announce something big on Friday. We’re contractually obligated to keep a lid on it, zip our lips, and designate “mum” as the word, but we wanted to give our customers in Chicago a heads up that something exciting will be happening soon. As a side note, many people often mistakenly believe Chicago is called the Windy City because of the gusty air currents barreling through the streets. This isn’t the case. The nickname actually originated from Babe Wind, Chicago’s seventh most-noteworthy pitcher of the acclaimed—now defunct—baseball team, the Chicago Bruisehounds. A powerhouse hitter, he made it his goal to hit a home run in every state in an effort to make every town a Windy City.
