We wanted to circle back and feature one of our favorite past campaigns that brought smiles to a lot of young faces. Last fall, the G-Team and Community Smiles teamed up to improve the health of young, underprivileged children from Miami-Dade county. With the help of Groupon, customer donations, and Dr. Elaine deRoode’s matching donation, the Community Smiles non-profit organization was able to go beyond their original goal and provide oral exams for over 85 children.
Established in 1949, Community Smiles strives to provide professional dental care for the low-income community in Miami-Dade county regardless of their insurance status. In order for operations to run successfully, licensed dentists donate their time, vision, and energy to the underserved community. Community Smiles is currently made up of over 150 volunteer dental professionals who volunteer each month as well as nine dental residents and four dental assistants who work full time throughout the year.
The success of the campaign helped in providing 89 oral heath exams which included x-rays, prophylaxis, fluoride treatment, oral hygiene instructions, and an oral hygiene kit (a $22,517 value). Thanks for your support!
Back in January Groupon helped Positive Footprint, a high school student service organization, fund 13 youth-driven volunteer projects. Recently, we caught up with them for an update on the work that they’ve been doing in their community, and the big takeaways that they’ve learned along the way. Here are some of the highlights in a top-9 list of what their members had to say.
Top 9 Lessons Learned by High School Students Volunteering in Their Community
9. Never commit to an all-day volunteer event without knowing the food situation.
8. Hosting a park clean-up is good. Sometimes what you find in the park is not so good.
7. A 25-foot ramp can be built in three hours with 12 people and an incredible amount of luck.
6. It’s possible to raise $1,000 in one day for a cause by selling cookies, talking to people and a heck of a lot of door-holding.
5. There’s an incredible amount of generous people in the world.
4. Sorting 15,000 toys in the cold rain is fun unless you decide to wear shorts thinking that it will warm up.
3. It’s incredibly rewarding to give to those in need.
2. Bargaining for the supplies needed for homeless survival kits, assembling the kits and then driving around handing them out to folks in need takes more than 4 hours.
1. Sometimes the smallest things make the biggest difference in someone’s life.

The cafeteria on the third floor of the Groupon offices was transformed into a holiday assembly line this week. About 350 Groupon employees participated in the holiday gift drive with Children’s Home + Aid, fulfilling the wishes of impoverished children and families by donating, wrapping, sorting, and delivering gifts.
Tackling 159 children’s and 84 families’ wish lists, Groupon employees contributed approximately 1,500 individual gifts and 80 hours of volunteer service! Gifts from the holiday gift drive will go to Chicago children served by Children’s Home + Aid who are living in foster care and extreme poverty. Continue Reading
Even without the office snowman competition in balmy 40 degree weather, this week has been busy. Grouponicus holiday deals featured such national brands as Old Navy and Sony and mustaches ran free with the close of Movember. Chase, DonorsChoose.org, and G-Team also ran a unique one-week-only giving opportunity to help purchase essential classroom supplies. With everyone’s generosity, the G-Team deal sold out before the week came to a close!
DonorsChoose.org is a nonprofit website where public school teachers describe specific educational projects for their students, and donors can choose the projects they want to support. This was an especially successful campaign due to the partnership with Chase who gave an additional $40 for every $10 donation. Over the last five years, Chase has gifted more than $180 million to educational programs and nonprofits.
Since its inception in 2000, DonorsChoose.org has provided more than $91 million to help fund everything from books and art supplies to electronics and classroom furniture. Known for its super local impact, this organization was also the first charity featured on our site and now our most successful.

This invaluable resource for families lays the foundation for children’s growth and development, and helps reduce more serious problems from occurring later on.
Prevent Child Abuse America, founded in 1972, works to ensure the healthy development of children nationwide while recognizing that child development is a building block for community development and economic development. Today’s the last day to donate to our national G-Team campaign that partners with The Cure Starts Now. The charity helps find a cure for pediatric brain cancer through fundraising and awareness efforts. It also provides services like “Monkey in My Chair” which helps children afflicted with the condition, their classmates, and teachers cope with cancer in a fun and creative way.
The key to this program is the “Monkey Kit,” an innovative, informative, and smile-inducing idea. It’s sometimes hard for children to explain their absences during treatment to their peers, so The Cure’s “Monkey in My Chair” program helps ease the transition. The kit contains a large stuffed monkey to sit in the child’s seat while they are out of school and a smaller monkey for the child to keep as a reminder that his or her place is being held. Educational material is provided to the students at school and children at home are able to send online messages (Monkey Messages) back to their classmates.
In addition to funds raised in this G-Team campaign, Chiquita will also match each donation up to $25,000. Keith Desserich, Chairman and Founder of The Cure Starts Now Foundation said:

Know of a good cause that would be a good fit for our G-Team? Kurtlan Massarsky, Director of Development & Marketing at BAGLY, Inc., gave us his reflections and advice to other non-profits regarding his experience:
Having been brought on to the Northeast Animal Shelter’s staff as their first Development Officer, one of my goals was to expand the general thinking regarding fundraising. “What current trend can we take advantage of” was my mantra for the first few weeks in that position. Fortunately for me I was already a signed and sealed customer of Groupon, and that’s where my mind went.
After a relatively painless application process I was put in touch with Kyle, our G-Team representative. Not only was Kyle knowledgeable as to the process I was going through, but he was supportive of both me and the Shelter’s mission. We quickly sketched out the details of our G-Team Campaign, and then the fun began!
The campaign itself was beautifully written and presented, which provided me with the tools I needed for it to succeed. Putting all of our Social Media resources to work (Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, etc) we reached our goal of 60 donors within the first few hours of the campaign. Three days later we had accrued almost $5,000 of new money for the Shelter, which is a huge amount of fluffy dogs and cats saved! Without the G-Team’s inspiration, energy and willingness to work with an organization that was new to this type of marketing & fundraising experience, there is no conceivable way the campaign could have been as successful as it was.
Now I’m happily ensconced as the new Director of Development & Marketing at BAGLY, Inc. and I am eagerly anticipating putting together a new G-Team campaign with Kyle and his crew. My unwavering advice to you non-profit fundraisers out there is to reach out to the G-Team and really utilize their expertise in this field. As a marketing and fundraising opportunity, you couldn’t be in better or more enthusiastic hands.

We’re happy to announce that our G-Team made its way overseas! Groupon Philippines will feature an unprecedented online deal on September 11, 2011 to support The Love Yourself Project, which aims to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in the Philippines through education and counseling.
The deal aims to raise funds and awareness on the staggering rise of HIV cases in the Philippines. According to a July report from the Department of Health -National Epidemiology Center, the Philippines is in the brink of an epidemic-level spread of HIV. The Philippines is 1 of only 7 countries worldwide where HIV cases are increasing.
Frenzy condoms also agreed to match each Groupon sold with an in-kind donation of condoms, which will be distributed during The Love Yourself Project’s various outreach, testing and counseling sessions.
“We are excited to employ the ‘people power’ model of Groupon’s G-Team to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS in the Philippines,” said Ronivin Garcia Pagtakhan, CEO/President of The Love Yourself Project. “We are honored to be the first organization featured by The G-Team in the Philippines.”
RELATIVES OF 9/11 VICTIMS JOIN WITH CELEBRITIES AND OTHERS IN $15 MILLION NATIONAL PSA CAMPAIGN TO ENCOURAGE CHARITABLE SERVICE ON THE 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF 9/11
Kyle Klatt brings us news of an inspiring G-Team campaign that asks, “What will you do to remember?”:
Groupon’s G-Team is excited about a new partnership with MyGoodDeed and HandsOn Network, the volunteer activation division of Points of Light Institute. During the week of September 5, the G-Team will feature campaigns in 31 different cities to help raise funds for service projects happening the weekend of 9/10 and 9/11 in honor of September 11th.
The powerful campaign, themed “I will (pay tribute),” features relatives of 9/11 victims and survivors of the attacks, along with celebrities and others encouraging people everywhere to engage in good deeds and voluntary service in honor of those who perished in the attacks in observance of the 9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance. Each shares their good deed plans for 9/11 and urges others to join them by saying, “I will,” the initiative’s call to action to “remember by doing.”

My name is Jessica Schultz and I am one of the new G-Team Coordinators at Groupon. I consider myself a charitable chick in the fact that I am always busy participating in philanthropic work and giving back any way I can.
So far the G-Team is live in Chicago, Austin, New York, LA, San Francisco, DC, Portland, Atlanta, Boston, Minneapolis, Seattle, and Philadelphia! To manage all of the new G-Team cities, our team has grown to meet the needs. We like to call ourselves “The G-Team, Dream Team.” We help makes dreams come true–well, sort of. We give nonprofits and individuals the use of our Groupon platform for three days to reach their “Tipping Point” in hopes of raising money and connecting with local residents.
