May is the Best Time to Buy Mattresses, Refrigerators & More

We used our industry-insider knowledge to find out when major categories like mattresses, appliances, and more are going on sale. And now we're sharing all the shopping tips we've accumulated with committed couponers like you. So go forth and save all through May.  

Flowers

Mother's Day is the first major holiday of the month and it's a doozy for all sorts of gifts. But shoppers will see the biggest discounts by far on buds and bouquets. Major retailers like Blooms Today are running specials of 20%–30% off and up.

Mattresses

Mattress sales are advertised during almost every three-day weekend, but Memorial Day is the absolute best time to buy. Stores tend to get new stock in during the spring months, which means May is the best time to buy a mattress at a bargain price. In the past, stores like Macy's and Mattress Firm have discounted mattresses up to 60% during the holiday weekend.

Refrigerators & Freezers

Three-day weekends are also synonymous with appliance sales. But once again, Memorial Day sales are at the peak of the savings summit. New models are often released in May, which means stores like Sears and Lowe's are heavily discounting last years' versions. Expect to see discounts on refrigerators as high as 40% if you wait until the end of the month.

Cookware & Small Appliances 

Late spring and early summer means two things—college graduations and weddings—and you'll probably need to buy a gift for both. Small appliances and cookware are popular choices to help people set up their new homes, and they are often on sale. Look for 30% off at retailers like Bed, Bath & Beyond and Kohl's  These sales tend to start early in the month and aren't tied to a holiday like Mother's Day or Memorial Day.

Memorial Day Sales

A long weekend is always the sign of a good sale, but Memorial Day is an especially good weekend for shopping. Expect to see discounts at all major home and department stores, with the biggest sales on big-ticket items like grills and outdoor furniture. But just because it's on sale, doesn't mean it will be the best price of the year. You're better off to wait on most outdoor equipment until after tFourth of July.
