Good news! It's the freakin' weekend, baby, I'm about to have me some fun! And by fun, what I really mean is, do my taxes. That's the little-known last line of every accountant's favorite jam "Ignition." So when you're done watching that music video for the first time since 2005, I know you're going to come at with a line like "the tax deadline is 80 days away, I still have plenty of time."
Technically that's true, but there are a few good reasons why you should file your taxes this weekend. First, the IRS will start processing tax returns on Monday, January 29. So if you can get your W-2s and 1040EZs all squared away with this weekend, you'll be one of the first to receive one of those sweet, sweet tax refunds. Secondly, companies like TurboTax and H&R Block offer deals on tax software early in the tax season when demand isn't as high, so filing your taxes early could save you money. And last—sorry to get so deep here for a second—tax returns and refunds don't get processed in the case of a government shutdown. Which means filing your taxes now might make sense because it's guaranteed the IRS will be paying refunds in a timely fashion. Plus, think of all the shopping you'll be able to do when they're done!
