The Swedish Academy announced today that author Kazuo Ishiguro is the 2017 winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature.
Born in Japan and raised in a Japanese-speaking household, Ishiguro grew up in England and his best known novel, The Remains of the Day, is centered on a quintessentially English character: an emotionally repressed butler who sublimates his own desires in service to his professional duties.
Ishiguro's writing is acclaimed for its spare beauty and lyricism, but his work remains incredibly accessible and enjoyable for all readers–even those who are skeptical of "literary fiction"–as his wide-ranging plots play with popular genres like science fiction (Never Let Me Go), detective novels (When We Were Orphans), and fantasy (The Buried Giant).
