I will never forget the year my brothers and I forgot to get my Mom a Christmas gift. I was 16, and on Christmas Eve, I drove to the store in a panic and picked up a $12 Whitman's Sampler of chocolates. From the three of us.
When Mom unwrapped it, she cried. (The bad kind of tears.)
Ever since, I've vowed to do better, but sometimes life gets crazy and special occasions slip my mind. So I've come up with a few strategies for great last-minute gifts that don't feel last minute. Check it out if you haven't found a Mother's Day gift quite yet—and yes, it is this weekend.
You can always run to your local Walgreens
and pick up a gift card for some of the most popular restaurants and stores. But eGift cards are great because they allow you more choice. Almost every retailer has them, so if the mom in your life has a special place in her heart for J.Crew
, or Macy's
, you can get her the right card.
Set up the eGift card to be delivered to her inbox on Sunday morning, or opt for a printable version and surprise her in person.
Housecleaning and babysitting
Call up a local housecleaning service or babysitter and book an appointment. Arrange to pay ahead or have the bill sent to you. If you don't have any businesses in mind, check out Handy for housecleaning (we have a $30 off coupon
that will get you even more bang for your buck) or Care.com for babysitting (we have a 15% off childcare promo code
Flowers and treats (with rush shipping)
For a little extra, many florists will let you sneak in a last-minute order; 1-800-Flowers has same-day delivery
in certain areas. Other places are running specials on shipping, like the The Popcorn Factory, which has a coupon code for delivery by Mother's Day
if you order by 4 p.m. EST on 5/7. So don't give up on online orders just yet.
Dinner and a movie
Caveat: Mom gets to pick the movie. Use this Fandango promo code
to get $5 off a $50+ Fandango eGift card, then tuck it into a card with a note promising to take her out to her favorite spot beforehand. If you don't live close enough to take her out in person, choose the "Dinner + a Movie" option and include a $25 gift card for dinner, too.
If you don't have time to run to Mom's favorite spa and pick up a gift card, check Groupon (of course) for beauty & spa deals
near her home or work. You may even get bonus points—personally, I think it's more fun to get a hot stone massage or mani-pedi certificate than just a straight dollar amount.
