More Healthy Years for Your Best Friend!
The AKC Canine Health Foundation is dedicated to funding research that will prevent, treat, and cure canine disease.
Founded and run by people who love dogs, our vision is to support all aspects of a dog’s physical, mental, and social well-being.
Because dogs share our lives and our environments, we purposely choose studies that will benefit people too. This is called “One Health,” and we embrace this model as a critical tool to achieving our vision.
Just this year, thanks to donations from dog lovers like you, we have:
- Funded research for hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive and deadly cancer of blood vessel cells. This research will help identify genetic risk factors for the disease, develop new tools to help diagnose our dogs earlier, and provide new treatment options for increased survival rates and a better quality of life.
- Funded four studies to identify the genetic cause of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and the underlying reasons IBD develops. IBD is a common problem in our dogs, which causes vomiting and diarrhea leading to reduced nutrient absorption and weight loss.
- Funded two epilepsy research grants that will identify the cause of the disease and make new drugs available to treat dogs that are impacted by this disease.
- Funded two landmark grants that aim to define the cause and risk factors associated with bloat (Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus) in dogs. Currently the causes of bloat, which usually occurs in large breed, deep chested dogs are unknown.
These efforts are the tip of the iceberg. We have so much more we must do to ensure our dogs live the longest, healthiest, most joyful lives possible.
We need your help! Your donation to the AKC Canine Health Foundation will benefit the dogs we love today and the dogs we will love in the future.
