Sun-Proof Your Summertime Skin Care Routine

BY: jolene | Dec 11, 2018

Summer—it is the best of times, and it can also be the worst of times for your makeup and skin care routine. All that sun and heat (we’re not complaining, but face sweat is a problem) can take a real toll on your skin. So we’ve rounded up some of our favorite products and skin care tips to help get you through hot summer days. Summer Skin Care Tips Sunscreen

Tip #1: Wear Sunscreen Every Day

Wearing sunscreen every day is the single best thing you can do for your skin. But it’s not just a summer skin care tip; you should be doing it year-round. It’s especially important to highlight during the summer though, when the sun’s rays are at their strongest and you’re more likely to be spending time outside. Besides protecting against long-term problems such as skin cancer and wrinkles, slathering on sunscreen has short-term benefits as well. It can help ward off brown spots and discoloration for more even skin tone, and it can also reduce redness issues like rosacea. Some of our favorites: To exfoliate during the summer or not?

Tip #2: Exfoliate Wisely

Dermatologists differ on whether you should be exfoliating more or less in the summer, so lets split the difference on this skin care tip: do what works best for you. With the heat comes lots of sunscreen and sweat. That means you’re likely to be washing your face more often, which in turn means you might not need to exfoliate as often. But the buildup of sunscreen, sweat, dirt, and oil in your skin can also lead to clogged pores, so you might need to exfoliate a little more often. If your skin feels tough and tight after cleansing, skip exfoliating. But if it doesn’t feel quite clean, scrub away. Some of our favorites: Exfoliation is key, except when it isn't

Tip #3: Add an Antioxidant Serum

We all spend more time outside during the summer, which means we’re also exposing our skin to more environmental pollution and stress. The sunshine and heat only exacerbate that buildup of grime and dirt, which is why adding an antioxidant serum to your summer skin care routine is a good idea. Look for one with vitamin C to slow down the signs of aging and to repair any damage that might already be done. Some of our favorites:

Tip #4: Use a Moisturizer with Hyaluronic Acid

Moisturizers can have a bad reputation for being thick and heavy. And that’s the opposite of what skin needs during the summer. But not all moisturizers are created equal—ingredients like shea butter and petroleum have their place, but it’s not in your summer skin care routine. Instead look for light gel- or water-based formulas with hyaluronic acid. These types of moisturizers give skin that dewy glow and long-lasting hydration, but without the smothering side effects. Tip #5: Find The Best Facial Mist For You

We all know that heat rises, but it also makes makeup run and can cause skin to look saggy and dull. Enter face mists. The refreshing blast of hydration cools skin down, giving your skin the midday pick-me-up it needs, whether you’re at work or a music festival. Best of all, the ultra-lightweight sprays go on right over your makeup and other products without making them run. I wouldn’t spend a ton of money here, experiment with a couple to find the one you like the best. Some of our favorites: Cold water is an important summer skin care essential

Tip #6: Take Cooler Showers

It’s so hot outside that you’re probably already doing this, so keep it up. The colder water doesn’t dry out sun-scorched skin as much and it also helps reduce inflammation to keep pores clear and breakouts at bay. Deals on reusable water bottle to keep you hydrated, from Groupon Coupons

Tip #7: Drink More Water

After sunscreen, drinking more water is probably the best summer skin care advice out there. Most people don’t drink enough water already, but add in the summer sun and heat, and your skin will be thirsty. Staying hydrated helps build up an internal layer of moisture in your skin, which makes it look and feel healthier. It also makes it easier for your skin to bounce back from things like sunburn and higher concentration of pollutants. A reusable water bottle should be your constant companion during these hotter days. Some of our favorites:
