When it comes to planning a vacation, picking where you want to go is only the first step. Once you’ve picked your destination, you’ve got to decide where you want to stay. And in a big city like New York, there are a lot of options. Groupon Coupons paired up with the travel experts at Priceline to find the best neighborhood to stay in New York.
New York is not a large island, so it seems like it wouldn't really matter where you stay. But trust us, it does. If you plan to see all the major tourist destinations, you’ll probably want to stay somewhere different than if you plan to eat your way through Brooklyn. Especially because traffic can make even short distances feel much farther.
Midtown has long been a hub for tourists because of its central location, but that also makes it one of the busiest areas. We chose it for first-time visitors because Midtown East is home to such icons as the Empire State Building, Radio City Music Hall, 5th Avenue, and the Museum of Modern Art. Other top spots like Times Square, Broadway, and Central Park are all just a short walk away. There is a huge range of hotels here from budget options like Best Western to pricey boutique high rises. Hotels and restaurants can be pricy in this neighborhood, so we definitely recommend visitors seek out other areas in the city to get the most bang for their buck on meals.
South and west of Midtown, the Village is the perfect place to find lots of New York charm. The neighborhood is full of Federal-style rowhouses, charming cafés and boutiques, and lots of nightlife. Thanks to NYU, the vibe here is younger, so there plenty of places to grab a slice of famous NY pizza or cheap eats.
