I have always been on the lookout for that one pair of shoes that could handle anything—day-long walks, hikes across rough terrain, a jump in the occasional puddle—all while matching everything I own and still managing to look cute. You know, the Holy Grail of footwear.
While I haven't given up my life-long quest, I have discovered that the winter months need a little more variety in the shoe department. There's just too many weather variables to contend with (like snow, slush, and ice) for a one-style-fits-all approach. So every winter, here's what you'll likely find lining my closet floor.

The Snow Boot
The workhorse of winter boots, the snow boot handles huge mounds of snow and icy temps with aplomb. Let it be your trusty sidekick as you shovel out your once-visible car or while you slowly trudge to work (uphill both ways, of course). My favorite-of-the-moment is the Sorel Tofino Cate Boots
The Walking Boot
When the temperature takes a dip but the sidewalks remain clear, you'll want boots that keep you warm without crowding your style. Enter, the ubiquitous UGG Australia boot. It comes in multiple styles, all of which are light, fashionable, and easy to slip on over skinny jeans or leggings. Check out the UGG Classic Short Woven Suede Boots
The Dress Boot
Fancy nights out call for a fancier boot. Knee-high or over-the-knee boots do the trick, all while keeping your legs warm and toasty. The Cole Haan Carlyle Dress Boots
get my top marks. If you're just dashing from cab to restaurant, you might consider a high-heeled shootie, like these adorable Clarks Delsie Stella
