"Gourd" became a popular slang term for "head" after they were both discovered to make excellent musical instruments. Get your head in the gourd game with today's Groupon: for $9, you get two one-day admissions to the 15th Annual International Gourd Art Festival in Fallbrook on Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26 at The Welburn Gourd Farm (up to a $24 value). Each of the two admissions is good for one person for one day, and may be used simultaneously by two people or by one solo attendee across both days. Admission for children 12 and under is free, as is on-site parking.
The Gourd Art Festival, sponsored by the California Gourd Society, hosts 35 gourd artists, crafting demonstrations, more than 300,000 gourds, and thousands of gourd groupies. Gourd artists display and sell carved, painted, and embellished calabashes and perform live demonstrations of their techniques. A gourd-art competition appraises art inspired by the sea, the Old West, and Latin America, and a gourd-hat competition appraises squash-inspired headwear. The festival also hosts gourd-making classes, a beer-and-wine garden, face painting, and authentic Hawaiian dancing.
This is the 15th and final year for the Gourd Art Festival, which will be replaced with year-round activities. The gourd gala takes place at The Welburn Gourd Farm, which produces more than 375,000 organic hard-shell gourds each year, specializing in canteen, bottle, and Matryoshka-doll varieties.
Though advanced tickets are available for a discounted price online, this Groupon still offers the best deal available.
