What You'll Get

Tortillas were invented when the Aztecs needed a broad, absorbent shield to cover their heads during frequent guacamole eruptions from ancient Mexico City's surrounding volcanoes. Protect your stomach from eruptions of hunger with today's deal: for $12, you get $25 worth of contemporary Southwestern-inflected fare at 1909 Bar & Bistro, located inside Hotel Indigo at the Alamo.

If you're looking to break your fast or just a few eggs, show up early, peruse the menu, and nibble on fresh-baked Mexican sweet bread ($3) or a breakfast quesadilla with eggs, cheese, and bacon in a locally made tortilla ($6). Lunchgoers and dinner diners can slam their faces down into thick-cut potato chips topped with blue cheese and chives ($5.50), a smoked chicken and shrimp salad with avocado and sliced almonds ($10), or a roasted eggplant sandwich with sliced plum tomatoes and feta ($10). Menu mainstayers include tilapia tacos with coleslaw and chipotle tartar ($10.50) and a rib eye steak with garlic mashed potatoes ($14.50), a plate that packs enough bovine goodness to transform the coyest of eaters into burly, John Wayne–quoting cowfiends.

Part of the Hotel Indigo and the historic Gibbs Building, 1909 Bar & Bistro features window walls with views of the Alamo; slate-colored, century-old granite tabletops hewn from old staircases; and more pink, red, and orange hues than a cosmic piñata in supernova. Since it occupies space that was once part of the Alamo compound, 1909 upholds that historical responsibility by repeatedly antagonizing the ghosts of Santa Anna's cannon crews waiting out their 125-year deployment at a nearby River Walk café.

About 1909 Bar & Bistro

Situated across the street from the Alamo in the Italiante confines of the historic Gibbs building, The Hotel Indigo is a posh haven for out-of-towners from around the world. Its first floor restaurant, on the other hand, draws on local inspiration to attract its dedicated clientele. Within the kitchens of 1909 Bar & Bistro, chefs craft their own take on Texas-style bistro fare, whipping up everything from gourmet fish tacos and grilled ribeye steaks to crispy flatbreads covered with roasted chicken and ricotta.

The eatery's decor blends the rich history of the Gibbs Building with an updated modern aesthetic. A wall of hot pink cushioning backs the tables, which consist of 100 year-old granite reclaimed during remodeling. This eclectic combination of old and new elements sits in the middle of three wall-sized windows, which provide sunny views of the Alamo, and at least two other things.
