Broke theater lovers. Enthusiasts of Latin American history & culture. Celeb gossip addicts. Your Groupon is here.

Today buy tickets to the Theatre and Interpretation Center at Northwestern University performance of The Sins of Sor Juana for just $2.. You’ll pay just one crisp Jefferson (he’s on the $2 bill, fyi), which is 92% off the normal price of $25 to see a brilliant play about the brilliant feminist thinker Sor Juana Inez de la Cruz. Centuries ahead of her time, Sor Juana was a nun in a Mexican convent in the 17th Century who wrote plays and poetry containing highly controversial feminist ideas, to the great frustration of the Catholic Church. Eventually forced to give up her writing by the Church, Sor Juana penned her last piece in her own blood & vowed never to write again. Under the direction of Artistic Director Henry Godinez, The Sins of Sor Juana is a historic fantasy of self-determination and self-expression exploring Sor Juana’s quest for artistic freedom and social equality. Northwestern University has one of the country’s top theater programs and has produced Hollywood stars like Stephen Colbert, Warren Beatty, Charleton Heston, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Zach Braff, David Schwimmer, etc. Today it costs thousands of dollars to see David Schwimmer in person, but think of all the missed opportunities Chicagoans had to see him perform in some great student-theater performances. In fact, when The Sins of Sor Juana was first considered for the Northwestern University stage in 1986, Schwimmer, then a junior, auditioned as Sor Juana herself…a bold move given the conservative cultural climate of the Reagan years. Many Reagan-loving groups protested the audition, but Schwimmer boldly took the stage and delivered a mind-boggling monologue as the feminist hero Sor Juana. Ultimately, it was decided to delay the production of Sor Juana for 23 years, so Schwimmer had to wait for fame and fortune to find him in other roles. But as 23 years have passed, Schwimmer is famous and Sor Juana has finally come to the Northwestern stage, all aspects of this story end happily … except for the ending of the play itself, what with the aforementioned bloody vow of the heroine.

So get your Groupon, get your mini-taquitos on, & prepare to witness some revolutionary feminist thought, as well as possibly the next Schwimmer.

PS - If you don’t like Schwimmer, keep in mind that it might be the next Colbert, Braff or Beatty too. Everybody likes those guys.
