_"Everybody join the rap
Do the Franklin Tap

With your after-work snack"_
It's uplifting refrains like this you'll hear being rapped in unison as you redeem today's mega-discount Groupon at the Franklin Tap. Pay just $20 to receive a $50 voucher for food and drinks at this South Loop establishment - that's 60% off! At 325 S. Franklin St., it's just seconds away from the Sears Tower and Union Station - the perfect after-work hangout for all you Loopers.
Use your Groupon to treat your coworkers to lots of drinks, then drop some lyrical damage with all the other customers. See, everyone at Franklin Tap constantly raps about Ben Franklin while "doing the Franklin Tap": a jovial tap dance done to the beat of the classic Old School 80's hip-hop drum machine rhythm that frames all the rhymes. When you do the Franklin Tap, lift your top hat on and off as you tap about (make sure your powdered wig is fastened tightly to your scalp). And brush up on your history before you come, because the Franklin Tap Rappers (the regulars) are always referring to Franklin's many accomplishments: his discovery of electricity ("the key on the kite string story"), his appearance on the $100 bill, etc.
_"Drop a Franklin at the bar 'cause I'm buyin' a round
Bartender - shots of Jager on me for the whole town
You don't need to electrocute yourself to dance to this rap
Just drop a shot of Belvedere and do the Franklin Tap!"_
Franklin Tap isn't just known for its regulars' ongoing rapping, but also for its food. FT's customer reviews in TimeOut Chicago praise its drinks, food and atmosphere:
- "The steak skewers were tasty and well-seasoned while the chicken tenders were plump and plentiful. They also stayed open pretty late, that was quite unusual for the loop. We look forward to clos[ing] them out next week!"
- "The meatloaf sandwich is AWESOME. The ribs and pulled pork sandwich ain't half bad either....The place seem to get packed around 4 pm. With limited choices in the loop to drink at without screaming brats, this place is just right."
Now make no mistake: Franklin Tap is indeed a sports bar. Golden Tee, plasma screens and darts are at your disposal. But it's a classy sports bar, with a solid beer selection - from local staples to quality imports like Newcastle and Red Stripe, and top-shelf liquors like Johnnie Walker Blue and Gran Patron. And it's from their sports roots that sprung forth the surprising tradition of freestyle. In 1985, they say, a bunch of Franklin Tap patrons were rapping to the Super Bowl Shuffle in celebration of the Bears' glorious Super Bowl victory and, when the lyrics to that song ran out, those customers just kept on going. Freestyling, on and on, 'til the break of dawn, through the 90s, blowing right on past Y2K and still going to this day. Everyone there knows an excessive amount of information about Benjamin Franklin, and they're constantly incorporating it into sweet rhymes with positive messages.
When you're redeeming your Groupon on pitchers of beer and the Turkey Avocado Sandwich with caramelized onion, parmesan and asiago on tomato focaccia, you might feel the urge to join in on common refrains such as:
_"Franklin wanted the turkey as our national bird
And as I eat this turkey sandwich I'm thinking, 'word'
Man was a genius, have to tip my cap
Now everybody bust a move and do the Franklin Tap."_
