Shrimping boats commonly use nets to collect their quarries, using the crustaceans’ natural love of fancy legwear against them. Nab some aquatic-fashion fans with today’s Groupon to the Big Shrimp’n on Thursday, November 3 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Alhambra Hall in Mount Pleasant. Choose from the following options:
- For $7, you get 15 food-and-drink tickets (a $15 value).
- For $12, you get 25 food-and-drink tickets (a $25 value).
Up to 18 restaurants put their best shrimp recipe forward, competing for the love of local taste buds and food critics alike during the 2011 Big Shrimp’n festival, put on to benefit East Cooper Community Outreach and The South Carolina Shrimpers Association by the same people who put together the Charleston Mac Off. Patrons kick off the local shrimping season by taste-perusing samples in 3-ounce portions (two tickets) to help determine which chef will win the People’s Choice award from among a lineup that includes Dog & Duck, Abe’s Oyster House, and Five Loaves. Meanwhile, one lucky shrimp monger will saunter away with the Critic’s Choice award, while the others chase him down and demand that he wait until the critics have actually made a decision. Liquid refreshments flow (two to five tickets each) as the southern-rock rhythms of Southwood and retro grooves of the David Higgins Band inspire visitors to raise the roof or simply lower the floor.
A Snappy Event
A Snappy Event brings Charleston residents together for fun and food-centric events held throughout the year. The party-planning machinations started with the Mac Off, a no-holds-barred mac 'n' cheese cook off, and have spread to other cuisine-themed bashes such as sushi festivals, oyster roasts, and ground-beef food fights. The annual food truck hoedown beats back the February chill with satisfying food and a raging bonfire, while the Top Gun '80s party is held from the flight deck of the USS Yorktown.
