Aside from climbing out of rattlesnake-infested quicksand or posing for rattlesnake-infested watercolor portraits, few activities combine the focus and physicality seen in martial arts training. Put up your dukes with today's Groupon: for $20, you get one month of unlimited classes at 360 Martial Arts Academy (up to a $135 value).
Chief instructor Paul Reyes brings more than 20 years of teaching experience to 360 Martial Arts Academy, as he helms a team of MMA instructors who guide combatants through an all-terrain combination of kickboxing, grappling, and weapons handling. Students commence butt-kicking with the Introductory Course, comprosed of one group and two semi-private classes, in which gurus teach the basics of muay thai, tae kwon do, kali, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. From there, the adult program takes the fully grown on a journey to black belt, during which trainees learn the rigors of self-defense and permanently banish suspenders from wardrobes. Underage pugilists train at one of three levels; 4- to 6-year-old Little Dragons and 7- to 8-year-old Dragons work through age-adjusted 10-month programs with a special belt system, whereas kids ages 9–12 immerse themselves in a miniature version of the adult track, which pits cherubs against juice boxes instead of kicking bags.
Other classes include Cardio Bag Training, which distills the plyometric and isometric body-building benefits of muay thai down to a fitness-focused, calorie-blasting activity. Boxers must purchase or bring their own hand wraps, gloves, and fly-catching chopsticks. Contenders interested in grappling can enroll in Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes, led by veteran instructor Alexandre Garcia, who first embarked on his martial-arts journey as a 9 year old in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro.
