Without filmmaking, directors would be forced to express themselves through day-lit shadow puppetry and public Morse code narratives. Discover powerful storytelling sans incessant beeping with today's Groupon: for $50, you get one entry into the 48 Hour Guerrilla Film Competition (a $100 value). Teams have until the first day of the competition, May 13, to sign up and participate.
The 48 Hour Guerrilla Film Competition invites professional and aspiring filmmakers to produce a compelling short film for prizes and pride. Contestants put together a filmmaking team of actors, directors, and writers, and then create a complete mini movie from a genre chosen at random, along with a line of dialogue that must be included in your film and a contest-selected prop, location, action, or some combination of these. Movie genres cover a gamut of classic film foci, such as western, action/adventure, horror, ’80s film, and sock puppet to pay homage to the foot actors of Greek tennis shoe tragedies. Upon receiving the needed information, film crews have just 48 hours to finish their inspired production, making teamwork and creativity a vital aspect in the entries.
After completing the quickly fabricated films, contestants are invited to see their work hit the big screen, as Guerrilla screens each entry at the Sarasota Film Society’s Lakewood Ranch Cinemas in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. Each year, one standout film and crew, chosen by the judges, receive a grand prize of $5,000 and a custom-made trophy, with other teams collecting such accolades as Best Directing, Best Editing, and People's Choice.
