So what is Pilates?
Pilates is an innovative, full body conditioning program developed by Joseph Pilates over a period of 40 years beginning in the 1920's, designed to strengthen the core musculature as it lengthens the body. Helios specializes in Fletcher Pilates, named after Pilates Master Ron Fletcher who developed a branch of Pilates technique called Fletcher Towelwork. Helios is the only Pilates studio in Chicago that teaches this amazing technique, a blood-pumping, mid-section-toning twist on Pilates that improves posture and shoulder stability, while providing an effective way of toning the upper body that doesn't use weights.
Beginner (foundation) classes at Helios will teach you a specialized percussive breathing technique. It is said that this technique enables you to "breath your way to flat abs." This is both true and remarkable, and the reason why when you enter Helios studio, you'll a whole lot of rhythmic exhaling going on. But the best part about Helios percussive breathing is the innovate reappropriation of the wind it generates. Watching a percussive breathing session at Helios is quite a site, as the instructors walk around to people in poses on their backs & hold saxophones and Peruvian pan-flutes to their quivering lips. The funny-haired Pilates conductor at the front of the room waves a Fletcher towel as his wand and conducts a variety of rhythms, as the class involuntarily performs his favorite pieces. Usually it's Philip Glass compositions, but go on a Fridays if you prefer Earth, Wind & Fire. And when the class feels like listening to Public Enemy, since you can't play the turntables with your breath, they percussively blow at the in-studio wind turbine, which surprisingly provides 15% of Roscoe Village's power.
A complete Pilates program involves both mat and equipment work. Many pilates programs today have focused more on the matwork. Usually this is because they're run by drug addicts who are forced to pawn their Pilates equipment for a fix, but rest assured that Helios is no such pilates studio and you will enjoy the full benefits of a balanced mat and equipment routine.
Joseph Pilates' claimed that "in ten sessions you'll feel the difference, in 20 you'll see the difference, and in 30 you'll have a new body." What he didn't say was that in 40 sessions of Fletcher Pilates you can go hunting with only a towel and with 50 you can move your car just by percussively blowing out the window. Get your Groupon and you'll see.
