A fine chocolate is like a fine wine: full-flavored, delicately structured, and inadvisable to consume while operating a Segway. Today’s Groupon gives you the keys to the chocolate kingdom: $30 worth of chocolates galore from 5th Avenue Chocolatiere. Use your Groupon at either the Midtown East or Flatiron location. Carrying homemade chocolates in all forms, including seasonal rabbit shapes and stealth chococopter, this 34-year-old family-owned New York shop is capable of quieting your noisy sweet tooth with an intoxicating chocolaty secret recipe.

Chocolates normally have a long shelf life, but 5th Avenue Chocolatiere creations are likely to only stay on the shelves for minutes or hours (due to deliciousness, not extreme chemical volatility). To combat rapid consumption rates, Chocolatiere’s chocolatiers create fresh batches every morning, using natural, high-quality ingredients to concoct their premium chocolates. The most popular item is a box of huge signature truffles, followed closely by a chocolate suit made of hand-woven chocolatextile. These chocolate wizards wield their dark magic to forge the mold-breaking truffles, which are made of pure Belgian chocolate. Show someone you really care or feed a small gaggle of cupids, and pick up a 24-piece of these favorites for $36; you can certainly purchase smaller 15-piece ($25) or 8-piece ($15) boxes, but remember that sharing is mandatory when it comes to chocolates.

In addition to truffles, the shop carries a wide range of other chocolate comestibles. Stop by a store for that day’s offerings, but expect assorted chocolates, chocolate-covered treats (from pretzels to peanut butter) and a large variety of masterfully sculpted chocolate figurines.

Share a chocolate or two with a friend, or share an entire box with an extra-special gibbon. Every occasion calls for chocolate. Mother’s Day and Valentines Day are a given. Administrative Assistant day and Sweetest Day are slightly more obscure. Kiss Your Coworker Day and Mime Appreciation Week aren’t even holidays (yet) but it matters not— 5th Avenue Chocolatiere chocolates make any imagined occasion a cause for joy.

Travel Muse highlights 5th Avenue Chocolatiere’s offerings:

  • The sculptured chocolate treasures at this Midtown chocolate shop are so amazing that they are almost too good to eat….Those opting for the more traditional variety can select from an assortment of chocolate covered strawberries, cherries, apricots, nut clusters and more. At 5th Avenue Chocolatiere, you will have the time of your life if you are in love with chocolates!

Corroborating Yelpers emphatically give the shop 4.5 stars.

I Am Your Chocolatiere

In the 1950s and ’60s, folk music enjoyed a popular revival that reshaped American culture—thanks, in no small part, to a vibrant scene in New York City. Many of those coffeehouse artists have come and gone, among them Carl “C-Note” Batavia, who, legend has it, was spurned by his high-school sweetheart and left school to become a crafter of fine chocolates, which he sold in white paper bags on the streets of Greenwich Village for 19 years before turning to music. The ordeal is loosely retold in his modern ballad, “Chocolate Man,” which became a groundbreaking work of the era.

The record sold more than 80 million copies in just two years, prompting Batavia to quit music indefinitely and pursue his lifelong dream project: moping in style.

About 5th Avenue Chocolatiere

Since 1973, 5th Avenue Chocolatiere's confectioners have risen before the rooster's crow to handcraft all natural, 100% Belgian-style chocolate into sweet treats. Created by founder John Whaley in a successful at-home experiment, signature truffles incorporate secret proportions of fresh cocoa powder, whole cream, and butter. Indulgences range from caramels to cookies, and chocolatiers mold cocoa into more than 100 shapes such as the Empire State Building and New York City Metro Card; a fungible currency for riding chocolate trains or bribing a crooked bus driver.
