On the Town is a madcap comedy from the creative brains of Leonard Bernstein and Jerome Robbins. It chronicles the misadventures of three rambunctious sailors let loose on a 24-hour shore leave in New York City. Performed in conjunction with the Spectrum Dance Theater, this performance features a star-studded cast of local and New York actors belting out Broadway classics such as “New York, New York,” and “I Can Cook Too” in one joyful evening of music, dance, and flirty romance.
The historic 5th Avenue Theatre (a former host to vaudeville shows) provides the ideal backdrop to watch On the Town unfold. Originally penned in 1944, this timeless tale still makes modern audiences think happy thoughts. If this family-friendly show were a motion picture, it would be rated PG, would feature a finely tuned sound system, and would be presented in a hyper-realistic 3-D technology called “real life.”
Yelpers give the 5th Avenue Theatre an average of 4.5 stars, and three Yahoo! Local users give it 3.5: > * Awesome local theatre: I’ve been a season ticket holder to the 5th for several years now and I can’t help but rave about the theatre! The local talent is excellent, the shows are fabulous, and the atmosphere is delightful. – Bunny, Yahoo! Local > * All events…are well presented. Audiences are treated as intelligent people who appreciate good live theatre. – cruise3253, Yahoo! Local > * The staff is consistently friendly and helpful and the productions are generally of the utmost quality. In particular, I appreciate that the 5th Avenue does a mix of traveling shows and their own in-house productions with local actors. – Anthony P., Yelp
