Master dance moves that don’t involve mimicking sprinklers, teen wolves, or robots with today’s Groupon. For $25, you get six dance classes at The Studio: A Dance Center for Adults in Brookline’s Coolidge Center (a $90 value). Your Groupon is good for any combination of ballet, jazz, modern, and tap classes but cannot be used for the Lambada, the forbidden dance, or the Sneaky Elbow, the really forbidden dance. Buy two Groupons, and get 12 classes for yourself.
The Studio does not advertise falsely with its proper name; dance classes are open only to elderly children 18 and over. This means you don’t have to worry about getting paired with an 11 year-old when you learn the boogie-woogie. It also means that the school caters to the busy schedules most adults have by conducting evening classes. The Studio’s friendly staff of knowledgeable instructors will guide you through the elegant techniques of ballet, the rebellious routines of modern, the swinging styles of jazz, and the stomps, scuffs, and shuffles of tap. The instructors may also help you bring out noise and bring in funk, but they will not help you move out of your apartment.
Besides helping you brush up on your new moves and prepare for the many spontaneous musical numbers life will throw at you, dance classes are also a great way to get exercise and strengthen coordination. Round up a group of friends and ask them the question that has stumped philosophers for centuries: "Shall we dance?"
Though The Studio is a new business, three Yelpers give it five stars, praising the classes, instructors, and atmosphere:
- The space is beautiful. The studio is very clean. I like the staff a lot… They're very open to suggestions and are genuinely interested in their students, like what they're looking for class-wise. I like that they are technique focused, vs. performance focused. – Alexis K.
- The owner, Sue, is incredibly friendly and makes everyone feel at ease….If there's enough interest in a specific genre, Sue will try to get it for you. There's no dress code at all, so you can dance in whatever feels comfortable – Corinna B.
