Q:

I would like to learn more about how to use my 30 year old Kenmore sewing machine (I don;t have the manual), and i would like to make a tote bag. Is that what the class teaches? Linda

Linda W.  asked on  Dec 7, 2011

A:

Hi Linda , Vintage Sewing Machines, New Sewing Machines, Computerized Sewing Machines . ALL are Welcome . You do not need the sewing machine manual to learn how to operate the machine - and a tote bag is what we practice building once we get up and running in the Sewing Machine Operation class. Thank you ~ Erika

Q:

Hi Erika, I'm interested in getting the SEWING MACHINE OPERATION class if I can also book some hemming/tailoring tutorial afterwards. I don't know how to use a sewing machine and I'd like to know to alter my clothes. Specifically, I'd like to learn how to take in some sweaters and hem up skirt lines. You mentioned in another answer above that people can book 30 minute focus sessions to learn something specific. What's the rate for that? And do you think I could learn the sweater/skirt alterations in 30 minutes - 1 hour? Thanks!

Francine  asked on  Dec 6, 2011

A:

Additional classes time can be purchased . The rate for additional time is $15.00 for 30 minutes . Sweater alteration / skirt alternation we could try to cover in 30 min . Additional class time is offered at a discounted rate .

Q:

i have absolutely no idea how to sew. Are the things in the 2hr class also covered in the 4hr class? or should i just take the 2hr first?

tim l.  asked on  Dec 6, 2011

A:

if you have no idea how to sew I recommend taking SEWING MACHINE OPERATION - that will provide the basics you need and then if you are interested in learning how to construct clothing take INTRO TO CLOTHING CONSTRUCTION which will provide insight to the construction of clothing . In other words : sewing machine operation is not covered in Intro to clothing construction . They are separate classes .

Q:

In the two hour class, would you be teaching how to hem pants?

Nydia S.  asked on  Dec 6, 2011

A:

I'm happy to instruct HEMING : jeans / or BLIND HEMMING trousers . The two hour class SEWING MACHINE OPERATION focuses on learning how to thread / operate / and understand all the settings and controls . We practice sewing a simple grocery tote in the Sewing Machine Operation class . But you can bring pants that need HEMMING to the Sewing Machine Class and ask me after class. We can book an additional 30 minutes focus session to learn something specific after you take the Sewing Machine Operation Class. Hope that helps . Let me know if you have other questions . ~ Erika

Q:

Hi, I am curious to know about the $90 special you are offering. I know the basics of sewing but I'm not great at it. However, I am very motivated to learn the clothing construction part, definitely not the ins and outs of the sewing machine which is why I think I would prefer the $90/class over the $30.00 class. Do I have this right? That in the $90. class one would learn the basics of putting an item of clothing together? Also, does the student decide what he/she makes or is it something pre-determined and if so what will the students be working on/creating in that class? Thank you very much, as I look forward to hearing back! Also, I have my own sewing machine do I bring it or will there be machines there for us to use during class? Thanks again. Sincerely, Tara

A:

We have sewing machines here you can use - or you can bring your own machine to the class. Intro to Clothing Construction focuses on building a basic t-shirt . We supply the pattern for you and you learn to build a basic t-shirt : instal the sleeves finish the edges, construct strong seams , build into the t-shirt like adding cuffs and waistbands can be explored and ~ and we even discus fun design details that will make your basic shirt not so basic. the pattern is included in the Intro to Clothing Class in sizes XS S M L - we provide male and female styles of pattern . Hope this helps- let me know if you have other questions ~ Erika
