If the resort had not been invented, intrepid skiers would be forced to learn the awkward social nuances of evergreen pines in order to find shelter and community. Celebrate the history of human engineering with today's Groupon: for $74, you get a one-night stay at 968 Park Hotel in South Lake Tahoe.

968 Park Hotel, a LEED–certified and State of California Green Lodging Program "Two Palms" hotel, is a resort renovated entirely from environmentally sustainable materials. Standard rooms include a queen or two double beds for up to four people, with trashcans and liners made from recycled plastic bottles, and recycled glass is used in shower and bathroom décor. Amenities include a zen garden, lounge, businessman daycare, a ski locker room, and a seasonal pool with furnishings made from TRPA–regulated dead trees.

Bushed boarders can embark on a massage, including a hot stone ($110 for 50 minutes), reflexology ($80 for 50 minutes), Swedish ($90 for 50 minutes), or the skier massage ($100 for 50 minutes) for those suffering from the sporting life. Season permitting, guests can traverse a five-minute walk to the Lake Tahoe beach or to guarded yeti playgrounds from the Heavenly Ski Resort gondola.

Rustic wood and stone tile rooms feature EPA–approved mattresses, a print from local artist Jon Paul, and furniture crafted from recycled wood. All buildings on the resort property are insulated with a material made of recycled crushed blue jeans mined from the purest punk communes. Environmental policy restricts the use of air conditioning 11 months out of the year.
