Alexandria, Virginia: Stomping Grounds for Historic Icons near Washington, DC

Situated about 8 miles south of Washington, DC, on the banks of the Potomac River, Alexandria was once the home of some of America’s most legendary figures. In Old Town Alexandria, the city’s official historic district, George Washington surveyed his troops from the door of Gadsby’s Tavern. Years later, a young Robert E. Lee attended Christ Church, a Georgian-style church built in 1773 that still hosts services today. Today, guided walking tours pass by both of these landmarks, as well as a dozen other historic sites and museums.

To see even more of the city, hop on the Free King Street Trolley. The trolley runs every 10–15 minutes, stopping at cultural and historic attractions. Along the way, you can stop at the salmon-colored Athenaeum, a 19th-century building that’s currently an art museum, or learn about old herbal remedies at the Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum, a medical-remedies store from 1796.

Great stay when attending Mark Center events The facility is large and very conveniently located near the Mark Center, Alexandria. Attending an event at the center was easy—a short walk around the corner and down the street, then across the street and up an escalator. The women who greeted me at reception were all wonderful-I’d been traveling all day, so it was nice to be taken care of (thanks especially to Dinda!) The room was great-it was spacious, very clean, quiet, and it had a lovely view from the windows—I felt quite safe and the linens/bed were perhaps the most comfortable out of all the hotels in which I’ve stayed…which is saying a lot! Esther and the whole crew at breakfast were the best—thank you for all the attention you paid to me and the other diners—the spread was great, and the waffle and omelette options on Friday…what a treat!

Great Spot Stayed here as we moved our daughter into her new place. Very close to her apartment complex, food, sites, etc. The hotel was very busy over the weekend as a conference center, but overall, it was a very good stay. My only complaint is that there are no fans in the bathroom. Makes showers very steamy and takes forever to cool down. The daily credit for my diamond status was appreciated. The sushi bar on site was very good. It's not too bad for pricing. Overall, nice stay, and we would return.

No complaints This is my 3rd time staying at this hotel due to the proximity to the location I was working at for the week. I really have no complaints. My stay was normal and as expected. The only comment I really have is breakfast was the same everyday except on Saturday they had an omelette and waffle station.
