High utility costs impose a significant financial burden for many low-income families. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the inability to pay utilities is one of the leading causes of homelessness.
A program of nonprofit A Nurtured World, 1house at a time renovates homes to improve energy and water efficiency, helping to alleviate the strain of high utility bills for some of Austin's financially struggling households. By installing energy-efficient appliances and plumbing, setting up solar electricity-generating systems, utilizing renewable-energy technologies, and educating homeowners and volunteers, 1house at a time strives to reduce carbon footprints while also trying to help families save 20%–70% on their utility bills.
Join G-Team and donate $10 to help 1house at a time fund a home-utility makeover for a low-income Austin household. If G-Team members raise $1,000, 1house will be able to provide the following renovations to one home:
- Caulking and weather stripping
- Install a low-flow toilet
- Install an Energy Star air-conditioning unit
If an additional $1,000 is raised, the house will also get attic insulation and fans or vents, as well as an additional Energy Star appliance replacement. G-Team donors will be invited to volunteer for the renovation project their donations make possible.
Unlike traditional Groupon deals, G-Team campaigns typically don't offer you a "discount" or "savings." So "buyer" beware—when you click "Buy" to donate your time or money to a worthwhile G-Team cause, the only discount you may receive is 100% off free, priceless karma. Read more about G-Team.
