A Chicago institution since 1973, The Abbey Pub hosts comedy, music, and special events within its friendly confines. On March 12, the St. Patrick's Day Festival starts with an emerald bang at 9 a.m., when a bus carts festival-goers to the St. Patrick's Day Parade for the traditional 21-shamrock salute. At noon, a group of Irish dancers performs ancestral Gaelic footworking routines, and at 1 p.m., traditional Irish musicians Larry Nugent and Tom Dahill take the stage. Beatles-tribute band American English pays homage to Ireland's easterly neighbor at 8 p.m. At 11 p.m., Celtic-rock hybrid The Sandcarvers close out the show, playing music from their three albums. See the full event lineup here.
On March 17, official holiday festivities begin at 8 a.m. with a live viewing of the GAA Games, followed by repeat performances from the Irish dancers at noon and Larry Nugent at 1 p.m. Traditional musician Danny Burns takes the stage at 5 p.m., followed by the potato-filled sounds of Mulligan Stew at 8 p.m. and the dulcet duet of traditional dance and bagpipes at 9 p.m. Celebrate into the night with 99 Bottles and tap toes as you wet whistles with two green beers, colored to match the sun as it rises over St. Patrick's Cathedral.
