The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum features a wide collection of original artifacts from Lincoln's presidency and his life in Springfield. View family photos, a hat from Lincoln's wardrobe, or a reproduction of Lincoln's cabin, crafted entirely out of Lincoln Log–shaped logs. Kids can try on Lincoln's suit, dress as a Civil War soldier, or forge the Gettysburg Address with slate and chalk in Mrs. Lincoln's Attic, a hands-on children's area. Life-size replicas of the Lincoln family showcase 19th-century fashions and preferred hand gestures and also double as visitor coat racks in a pinch, and the entire family will be awed by a sobering visit to a re-creation of the Presidential Box at Ford's Theater to reflect upon the president's touching last words to his wife.
Frequently host to a number of traveling and temporary exhibits as well, the museum is currently exhibiting Team of Rivals: Lincoln's Cabinet at the Crossroads of War (through January 16, 2012), an exploration of Lincoln's White House in wartime, commemorating the Civil War Sesquicentennial. A roughly two-hour drive from downtown St. Louis, the museum opens its doors to the public seven days a week, with the exception of New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and any days not ending in "day". As a bonus, Groupon customers also get a 10% discount at the museum store, where they can tote home replicas of Lincoln-era artifacts and period-related games, toys, and gifts.
Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum
Less than 90 minutes from St. Louis, the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum houses the world’s largest collection of original Lincoln artifacts, complete with the Gettysburg Address. A life-size replica of Lincoln’s log cabin set back in a forest of artificial trees stands 40 feet tall just like the President’s iconic top hat. The museum also houses a re-creation of the Presidential Box at Ford’s Theatre, where the president was assassinated, and the state-of-the-art Union Theater, which projects films such as Lincoln’s Eyes, a broad overview of Lincoln’s personal and political life with a special focus on slavery. In the Ghosts of the Library exhibit, transparent phantoms of Lincoln and his contemporaries drift around powered by Holavision technology. Youngsters, supervised by parents, can try on period dress, pose for photos with life-size cutouts of young Abe, or reenact historic scenes in the Lincoln Home dollhouse located in Mrs. Lincoln’s attic, the hands-on learning center. Before heading home, patrons can browse the museum store—more than 3,500 square feet of artifact replicas and Lincoln-themed merchandise.
