My daughter, 5 year old grandson and another set of grandparents enjoyed the academy. Everyone learned something from the 5 year old to 65! All reported back to me that the day was fun, interesting and educational without being boring. The dinosaurs were a hit!

I thought it could use some more exhibits. But the live animal show was great.

Since 1812, the Academy of Natural Sciences has cultivated a collection of more than 17 million cataloged natural-history specimens, giving visitors an extensive look into the earth's natural occurrences. Examine the Academy's several permanent and changing exhibits by cavorting amid preserved beasties in the museum’s antique dioramas or by studying ecological impact while working on your short game in the summer’s miniature-golf-inspired Fore! The Planet (through September 25). Examine more animated members of the animal kingdom in the fascinating Live Animal Center or strike prehistoric poses in the museum's popular Dinosaur Hall, lorded over by a 42-foot Tyrannosaurus rex that comes alive at night to scribe scholarly monographs critiquing his representation in modern cinema.

About Academy of Natural Sciences

By most people’s standards, the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University is old — founded in 1812, it’s the oldest natural sciences institution in the Western Hemisphere. But the Academy is a baby compared to the specimens it houses, some of which date back more than 350 million years. Explorers Stephen Long and Ferdinand Hayden’s series of western wilderness expeditions formed the foundation of the Academy's 18-million-item collection, which it began displaying to the public in 1828. Now situated at 19th and Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the Academy houses more than 35 dioramas of plants and animals collected during global wildlife expeditions, a hands-on children's nature center, and a signature Dinosaur Hall. Guests can get face-to-face with towering dinosaurs, meet live animals, and explore a tropical garden filled with live butterflies. With interactive science exhibits from around the globe, a fossil dig, and opportunities to interact with science experts, Philadelphia’s natural history museum offers surprises for all ages.
