Catch Yankee Tavern at the Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte for up to 54% off regular ticket prices with today’s Groupon. Occupy the front-edge half of your seat during the “rolling premiere” of this production, meaning it will debut at four cities around the country, just like simultaneous Mothra attacks.

Yankee Tavern is the latest in a string of acclaimed performances at the Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte, a theater company that also happened to pick up a Best of Charlotte 2009 Award from Creative Loafing’s critics and readers. This psychological mind trip follows young lovers Adam and Janet, proprietors of the historic Yankee Hotel. When a stranger enters the friendly confines of the hotel’s tavern, a link to the past sets off a chain of events that threatens to unravel the very fabric of American history. Mysterious faces appear, guns are drawn, and conspiracy theories bleed into reality.

Although this isn’t a motion picture, Yankee Tavern shares a few commonalities with a night at the movies. It’s appropriate for ages 13 and over. It costs about the same as a trip to the cinema. And it’s performed entirely in 3-D.

To get your ticket, bring your Groupon and ID to the box office on your chosen performance night.

Both critics and readers chose the performance troupe as the best theater company in Charlotte in 2009, while a review of the same play in a different city gives a glimpse into the make-you-think plotline: > * If you’re into conspiracy theories, Yankee Tavern will get all the conspiratorial juices inside of you flowing nicely. – Kevin D. Thompson, Palm Beach Post > * A repeat winner….Actor’s Theatre of Charlotte made its 20th season a true milestone. Along with the usual surpassing excellence of Lieutenant of Inishmore, Rabbit Hole, and Blue and successful remounts of Santaland Diaries and Bat Boy, Actor’s Theatre surpassed itself with the world premiere of Eric Coble’s Southern Rapture. – Creative Loafing

Journey Into the Danky Cavern

Yankee Tavern is an edge-of-your-seat thriller that will leave you questioning anecdotal history and viewing the world with a new, critical eye. It’s much better than the similarly named play, Danky Cavern, written and produced by a former college student and personal computer owner, Garrdin Sammels. Garrdin has posted an excerpt from his masterpiece online, in hopes of inciting investor interest in a play that takes place in total darkness, performed inside of actual caves.

The stage is dark. A drip-drip-drip sound is happening inside of the cave where we are. That’s right…a cave. We hear two characters enter.

MARK: We are, all of us, born into a world of darkness. Eyes squeezed tightly shut; we are all torn screaming from our mothers.

PAUL: This cave represents our feelings. Our inner feelings.

MARK: The Earth is like a mother to all of us, and in this cave, we return to her.

PAUL: The salamanders and bats are like the emotions that dwell within our real mothers. Blind and cold.

IN UNISON: Blind and cold. Blind and cold. (Repeat 6x)
