What You'll Get

Without the skills to survive in the wilderness, humanity never would have been able to make the trek through forests, deserts, and mountains to find the cities we live in today. Keep your moving skills sharp with today’s Groupon: for $50, you get a survival-training clinic from survival expert Cliff Hodges, featured on MTV, at Adventure Out, with locations in Boulder Creek and Fairfax (a $99 value). This Groupon is valid for either the beginner or the advanced survival class; students enrolling in the advanced must have already completed the beginner.

Instructor Cliff Hodges expands Adventure Out students’ survival capacity with five-hour clinics covering four basic wilderness-survival skills—shelter, water, fire, and food—using skills that have been featured in Popular Mechanics magazine. Beneath the looming boughs of Santa Cruz redwoods, adventurers of all ages employ techniques developed long ago by the area’s natives to construct temporary shelters that fend off the rain and annoying requests from neighboring bears to “borrow” a cup of sugar. Students learn to use friction to coax sparks from betwixt dry twigs before sating worked-up appetites with the forest’s edible plants. Hodges also imparts the know-how to craft traps using simple materials to capture protein-rich meals or Hollywood’s most elusive directors. The clinic includes all necessary materials, prepacked by forest-striding experts, so guests only bring clothes appropriate for outdoor activities.

About Adventure Out

When Cliff Hodges, the founder and CEO of Adventure Out, graduated from MIT with a degree in electrical engineering, he knew a traditional desk job wasn't for him. According to Technology Review, he quickly gave up his engineering career for the wireless world of the great outdoors, where he began to hike, climb, and surf his way around the world, always staying true to his philosophy of environmental respect and protection.

His travels and business accomplishments have gained some measure of notoriety: he's coached on MTV's Made, consulted for ABC News, and was selected as one of four winners of the 2011 Santa Cruz County Civic Service Award: The Nextie. Adventure Out was also identified for meeting survival-skills training standards by New York Times best-selling author Tim Ferriss in The 4-Hour Chef.

Today, he leads excursions into the California wilderness to teach backpacking and survival skills, including the tracking of animals and wild ice-cream trucks, and they also guide novices through surfing, rock-climbing, and mountain-biking sojourns. Through fundraising, Adventure Out has helped save Castle Rock State Park from closure and a portion of their proceeds is put directly back into the park.
