In addition to acting as protection for the Florida coastline from storms, hurricanes and erosion, mangroves provide a very important habitat for wildlife, acting as a nursery for young flora and fauna, a water filter for pollutants and carbon dioxide, and supporting local fisheries around the area. Wildlife includes a large variety of fish, birds, turtles, shellfish, manatees, and more. Tides help shape the mangrove forests by flushing out toxins, waste, and other pollutants, while also working to control salinity, transporting nutrients and aerating soil. Tides can also disperse mangrove seeds to new areas and help form oxygen-rich sediments where mangroves grow.
During this tour, we'll go over some of the wildlife that lives here, how to navigate the tides and how to go on your own kayak adventure in the Tampa Bay area!
Meet time is 9:30 AM at Picnic Island Kayak and Canoe Launch area located at: 7409 Picnic Island Blvd, Tampa, FL 33616. Please bring your own reusable water container, a hat/sunglasses and water/weather-appropriate clothing. We will have water, reef-safe sunscreen and a snack available.
