During two-hour trapeze classes, Aerial Trapeze Academy’s high-flying instructors introduce novices to the sport and give seasoned artists a push toward becoming more polished aerial artists. Small classes of up to 15 people start off with stretches and a ground lesson before graduating to a beginner position called a knee hang. Next, students perform a backflip dismount into the net, or, for more daring students, into a damp sponge.
The class emphasizes practice by repetition, and aerialists will have multiple chances to hone their artistry. At the end of the two hours, students have the opportunity to attempt a midair transfer with a professional catcher, a maneuver that will make adrenaline pump and fear of heights seek out higher elevation. Class participants should wear clothing that is somewhat tight fitting and flexible; jeans are not recommended.

Matthew Altbuch started learning the art of circus performance at the tender age of eight, quickly mastering the unicycle, juggling, and the trapeze. Throughout school, he performed in talent shows, ultimately going on to spend time with the Florida State Flying High Circus after college. Eventually, he realized his passion lay in sharing the circus arts with others, so he founded Aerial Trapeze Academy to carry out his mission of training performers around the world. He now lives his dream, joined by three other teachers as he holds trapeze classes for the next generation of gravity-defiers.
