As the flagship theater of the American Film Institute, the AFI Silver Theatre streams talkies on three state-of-the-art screens. The 23rd annual AFI European Union Film Showcase is a cinematic explosion of more than 40 of the EU's most acclaimed silver-screen gems from the last two years. The Robber, an Austrian film, chronicles the true story of the jailed Austrian bank robber/marathon enthusiast Johann "Pump-Gun Ronnie" Rettenberger. Tired of running in circles around the prison yard and holding up the vending machine, Rettenberger sets out to gain parole in time for an upcoming marathon, only to struggle with his urge to scratch his unrelenting bank-robbing itch. A 2010 Oscar Selection from Poland, All That I Love combines the heart-wrenching romance of Romeo and Juliet with the antics of an American teen sex comedy. Set in 1981 in the midst of Poland's politically charged Solidarity movement, the film explores the unexpected romance between an aspiring punk rocker and a union leader's daughter. Reviews

The AFI European Film Showcase was featured on indieWIRE. The AFI Silver Theater was dubbed by the Washington Post as the "Great Silver Hope" for a revitalized area of Silver Spring, and it has a perfect five-star average from impressed Yelpers:

  • Belgium’s official bid for the Best Foreign Language Film award at next year’s Oscars, and Isabelle Huppert’s latest, “Copacabana,” will bookend the 23rd edition of the AFI European Union Film Showcase – Nigel M. Smith, indieWIRE
  • The building houses three theaters. The largest and grandest is the 400-seat AFI Silver I, the historic auditorium that has been carefully refurbished so as not to lose the character of the original. Filled with art deco touches, it feels like an old-time movie house, the kind you were either lucky enough to visit as a child or that you heard about from your grandparents. – Jen Chaney, Washington Post
