The African American Museum in Philadelphia chronicles history with video reenactments and four galleries featuring hundreds of thousands of images and documents from the last 300 years. Actors breathe life back into the lives of inventors, athletes, and historical icons in video docudramas screening on the second floor, right next to the robots pantomiming the accomplishments of future luminaries. Beginning on the second floor, an in-depth exploration of captivity and slavery sheds light on the story of civil rights, and leads visitors upwards to the third, fourth, and fifth floors. The galleries’ objets d’art include utensils and tools, photographs and historic home furnishings, and fine and folk art created by African American artists during different chapters of history.

The museum’s collection resides within a five story stucco-like structure that evokes an African mud house. Rich history pervades the soil upon which the building was erected, a scant number of blocks from the Liberty Bell and a few feet from where Theodore Roosevelt first learned how to write a cursive T.

About African American Museum in Philadelphia

Since its founding in 1976, the African American Museum in Philadelphia has worked to preserve and honor African Americans' heritage through exhibitions, collections, and cultural programs. Four galleries contain exhibits delving into themes including the African diaspora, African American life in Philadelphia, and contemporary African American narratives. The core exhibition, Audacious Freedom: African Americans in Philadelphia 1776–1876, showcases a timeline detailing how African Americans lived in that era, and brings key historical figures to life through 10 life-size video projections. Visitors can interact with each of the projections, listening to their stories and requesting further topics of discussion, such as the Internet's role in their lives. Another gallery focuses on African American life post-emancipation leading up to the modern day. In addition to engaging exhibitions, the museum also boasts an extensive collection of historical artifacts, including Negro league baseball memorabilia, records, musical instruments, photographs, and the time machine that was used to retrieve each item.
