Choose Between Two Options
- $69 for one admission to a three-hour sailing tour and wine tasting (a $138 value)
During the tour, captains take groups of up to six passengers on a three-hour sailing journey across the San Francisco Bay. The vessel most often sails by Yerba Buena Island, Treasure Island, Alcatraz, and along the San Francisco waterfront toward the Golden Gate Bridge. After this scenic sailing voyage, groups are led by the captain to a neighboring winery a sampling of fine wines from one of two award-winning wineries; hard liquor and red wine cannot be consumed on board the cruises. Cruises depart at either 9 a.m. or 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday year round, with Thursday and Friday cruises also available part of the year.
- $195 for a two-day introduction to sailing class (a $390 value)
The two-day introductory course teaches the basics of keelboat sailing over a total of 14 hours. Classes of four or fewer learn the mechanics of sailing and get hands-on practice guiding the vessel through the light and moderate winds of the Oakland Estuary. Topics covered include important knots, sailing terms, safety, and ways to communicate on a boat. Students emerge from the course with the skills necessary to be a quality crew member.
Afterguard Sailing Academy
Sailing out of Central Basin in Oakland or Treasure Island, Afterguard Sailing Academy's Intro to Sailing courses are a great way to get a taste of the passion held by so many people across the world. For more in-depth instruction, multi-day courses are available, giving participants the chance to learn some of the knots, lingo, and practices.
Thanks to the academy's team of seasoned captains, tours are only one way to experience sailing's thrills. Their instructors also teach comprehensive American Sailing Association certification courses, which aim to transition ordinary passengers to crew members and skippers for more independent sailing adventures of all types. As students progress, instructors teach more advanced lessons, such as bay basics and ocean sailing. Aside from these lessons, the captains also run a nonprofit sailing academy for youth.
