A Chat with Aikido Institute of America
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
The Aikido Institute of America (AIA) was founded by Roderick Kobayashi Sensei in August 1970, with the approval of both Master Kisshomaru Ueshiba and Master Koichi Tohei. It is one of the oldest and most respected Dojo's in America.
What's one tip for first-time students that will make them feel like veterans?
The most important thing for new (and even experienced) Aikido students to remember is that the art is not based on physical strength but rather blending, leading and the proper use of Ki (energy) The sooner they stop trying to win the fight, the easier the techniques will become.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
AIA was founded to spread the non-violent ideas of Aikido to the United States. It is deeply rooted in the philosophy that our goal should be to resolve conflict and defend oneself as peacefully as possible.
What do you love most about your job?
There is a moment that always occurs the first time an Aikido technique works for them. It usually feels like magic and their eyes light up as this new way of thinking and existing within the world opens up to them.
