What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art, which strives for peaceful resolution rather than defeat. The basic movements are circular in nature while harmonizing with, rather than combating, an aggressive line of force. Aikido’s physical practice reflects its deep philosophical component.
What’s one tip for first-time students that will make them feel like veterans?
The dojo is a friendly, warm place where beginners are welcome. Everyone practices at their own level in a non-competitive environment. Individual attention is given in each class, and progress evolves based on practice. Fitness, flexibility, strength, and stamina are not required to begin.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
Litchfield Hills Aikikai is the only traditional aikido dojo in Litchfield County. It is a member of the United States Aikido Federation and is thereby directly affiliated with Aikikai World Headquarters in Japan. It is dedicated to teaching the principals according the founder, Morihei Ueshiba.
What do you love most about your job?
The Aikidoist betters oneself without belittling others, without the intention of [causing] harm or fear of injury. Aikido maintains the qualities of effective technique and intense training, coupled with the premise of mutual respect and caring. This encourages the founder’s spirit of universal peace.
