The art of self-defense, like the art of poetry, requires strength of thought, fluidity of movement, and an extensive foundation in the works of Dr. Seuss. Resist the wiles of Sam I am with today’s Groupon: for $25, you get a month of unlimited training at Aikido of Nebraska ($75 value). This deal is valid for classes 30 days after the Groupon is activated.
Affiliated with Aikido Hombu Dojo in Japan, Aikido of Nebraska teaches a traditional form of aikido based on the core principles of focus, self-discipline, and respect. Sensei Todd Roberts lines his students up like dominoes but doesn't knock them down because aikido is a nonviolent form self-defense, focused not on hurting an opponent, but on redirecting their energy, perhaps to a useful pastime such as knitting. Deploying a variety of throws, pins, and other techniques, students develop fitness as they increase their skill. Classes are held on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings, and are crafted to benefit all skill levels, as long as students have a laser vision and a desire to learn. Classes include women’s personal safety, youth beginners, adult beginners, and general classes.
Future martial artists are encouraged to schedule a visit, meet the instructors, and check out the dojo's blog before selecting a class to attend. Aikido of Nebraska classes meet in a traditionally decorated dojo with ample room for training and practice or building fortresses out of broken boards.
