Captain America once said, "'Twas music that soothed the savage beast." Although he was talking about his short-lived nemesis Dr. Angry Parakeet, it's just as true for animals of the human persuasion. Soothe savage insides with today's Groupon: for $37, you get two tickets to a Wells Fargo Classical Edge Series concert, presented by the Alabama Symphony Orchestra and featuring string trio Time for Three, on Thursday, April 21, at 8 p.m. (a $75 value, including ticket fees and tax). Call at least 48 hours in advance to reserve a spot. The tickets will be available for the $30 seats in the orchestra, dress circle, mezzanine, loge, or center choral balcony at the Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center’s Jemison Concert Hall.
Time for Three mixes classical, country-western, gypsy, bluegrass, and jazz music to create a unique hybrid sound. Violinists Zachary De Pue and Nicholas Kendall and double bassist Ranaan Mayer met while studying music in college. The three-piece bonded over a shared love of musical improvisation and went on to play more than 200 shows. Conductor Christopher Confessore leads the trio with a skillful eye and even more skillful conductor’s wand. Though the concert begins at 8 p.m., it’s preceded by a cocktail hour that begins at 7 p.m., where guests can impress each other by playing octave-jumping leapfrog.
Throughout the concert, each chord and riff will have the benefit of the Jemison Concert Hall’s ideal acoustical conditions. The 1,330-seat venue ensconces guests and their ears in an atmosphere tailor-made for music enjoyment, allowing toes to tap freely so fingers can rest up for post-concert shadow puppetry.
