What You'll Get
Fishing in scenic, unspoiled rivers is far preferable to reeling in catches found in mall fountains and bathtub gin distilleries. Cast your line into ice-cold waters with today’s Groupon: for $1,249, you get a four-night, three-day fishing retreat for two from Alaska Half Price in Ninilchik on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska (up to a $2,498 value). The retreat is available from May 1, 2012 though September 15, 2012 and includes:
- Four nights of cabin lodging
- Three days of guided fishing trips with gear
Adventurers arrive on Monday and depart the following Friday.
Alaska Half Price leads pairs of valiant salmon-seekers on two days of scenic fishing adventures down the picturesque Kenai and Kasilof rivers, with a final day of wrangling in Cook Inlet. During each 6- to-8-hour jaunt, a seasoned guide navigates a 20-foot vessel through whichever river hosts the most plentiful salmon swarm that day, counseling fisherpeople on the proper way to bait a hook, with bait and tackle provided. Test your might by hauling in a mighty king salmon or an aerobatic silver salmon. Like a replica of Mount Rushmore made entirely of taffy, the plentiful sockeye salmon found in both rivers is both majestic and delicious. As a final test, Cook Inlet's tranquil waters pit fishers against the complex plays of legendary barn-door-sized halibut. Alaska Half Price’s skilled fishmongers process all varieties for an additional cost ($50), cleaning and filleting catches with the precision of a freshly minted surgeon before vacuum-packing and flash-freezing them.
Bookending each day's fishing expedition, adventurers retire to one of the area's lodge rooms or majestic cabins, huddled among woods and along waterways in the region of Ninilchik. Guests can hide from ghosts seeking campfire story-stardom in the Bluff cabins or in Inlet View cabins, which boast panoramic inlet and mountain views as well as full kitchens or kitchenettes, satellite TV, and grills. Although four-night excursions include lodging and a full fishing arsenal, Alaska Half Price does not cover meals, travel expenses to the site, or gifts for recently befriended worms. Alaska Half Price is located on the lush Kenai Peninsula and is accessible by car and plane. Cars can be rented in either Kenai or Anchorage, and the aeronautically inclined can catch one of the several daily flights from Anchorage to Kenai. Additional days of lodging and fishing can be purchased for $250 per person per day, and guests can switch from one type of fishing to another for an additional fee of $75 per person.
