Choose Between Two Options

Armed with a D-SLR or other camera of choice, students meet at the Academy’s headquarters in Palmer for four hours of intensive learning. Besides covering basic camera operation, the compressed course encompasses the essentials of aperture setting, shutter speed, and artistic-photography principles. Then, the whole class packs up and heads off to Hatcher Pass in Mat-Su Valley for two to three hours. From there, guides help students to apply their learning as they traverse lush fields and mountain vistas on their way to the ghostly abandoned shacks and roller rinks of Independence Mine.

Workshops are held every Saturday in June, as well as Saturday, July 28, and Saturday, August 18. Additional dates may be added as demand requires.<p>

Alaska Photography Academy

Chance and Roxie Mayberry take any opportunity to get out of the studio and into vibrant real-world scenes. As the duo behind Anchorage's Mayberry Studio, they shoot families as they slice down the slopes or bond with animals, and as instructors at Alaska Photography Academy, they take students deep into wild local landscapes. Photo safaris adventure to such destinations as Matanuska Glacier and Hatcher Pass, with some shots even accomplished from the backs of sturdy ATVs. Although these intensive excursions are open to all, more experienced clickers can pursue more in-depth classes or private lessons. No matter the level, courses emphasize practical, professional-grade tips and avoid technical jargon and risqué language such as "flash."
