What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?

Come check out Walnut Creek’s newest after school STEM program! Aloha Mind Math uses the abacus to build a solid foundation which allows students to perform mental calculations. Kids find learning math on the abacus fun! This ancient form of visual and kinesthetic math builds on a child’s natural inquisitiveness and imagination, teaching children number systems, concepts and most importantly…number sense. Students exposed to visual math understand that math is really a way of thinking, broadening their understanding of math and realizing that they too can be math super stars.

What was the inspiration to start or run this business?

I have always been a student of childhood development and understanding how kids learn and thrive. My 11 year old daughter is my inspiration and a student of Aloha for 1.5 years. I have seen her develop skills and confidence that spread way beyond math. My 20 years in programming, finance and serving as Controller of a 600+ organization gives me insight into the future of big data, and a desire to help kids excel in math.

What do you love most about your job?

I love seeing kids get excited about math! Our classrooms are alive with students calling out answers to equations as fast as they can. Math is known to be rooted in our visual cortex, and when taught this way, is fun.
