Drinking wine is an activity that sometimes makes people believe they’re funnier, smarter, and two feet taller than they actually are. Today’s Groupon prolongs the non-truths with $40 worth of wine and savories for $20 at Alu Wine Bar, a recently revamped eatery with a focus on sustainable sips and savories.

Alu offers sips and suds to please all palates. Its extensive menu boasts a variety of domestic stouts, IPAs, ales, and imported lagers as well as 22 different wines by the glass. An easily navigable wine list—organized into categories including food-friendly wines, biodynamic reds, and bubbles—eliminates ordering guesswork for even abecedarian oenophiles. The more adventurous can attempt a libation from the inventive cocktail menu such as the Julius Caesar (Aperol, Licor 43, fresh OJ, homemade triple sec, simple syrup, orange flower water, and cream, $9) or Holiday Fruit Cake (Sailor Jerry spiced rum, fresh OJ, Fee Brothers barrel aged bitters, Chinotto, palm syrup, and candied cranberries, $7).

Guests can relax on a plush, Victorian sofa and play surrealist parlor games while friendly servers ensure no glass is empty. Pair sips with shared plates, such as marinated olives and almonds ($4), house-pickled vegetables ($3), or popcorn ($3). Alu also offers heartier options, including sea scallops with delicate white asparagus, cranberry, and elderflower ($14) or smoked potato gnocchi with chicken confit, brussel leaves, and saffron cream ($12). The sensual, cove-like décor (exposed brick, candle light, ravenous mini-humanoids scurrying everywhere) adds to Alu's allure, making it a smart stop for unwinding and imbibing.

The Oregonian and Willamette Week have both featured Alu:

  • …an evening here makes for quietly serious and surprisingly enjoyable dining….The waiters are snappy and fun, well-informed, cheerful even when the proceedings are hectic. – Roger Porter, Oregonian

Yelpers give Alu a near perfect 4.5 stars, Citysearchers give it four, and 94% of 34 Urbanspooners like it:

  • The atmosphere is so great, fun outside area, beautiful decor. Impressive international wine list and a bartender who knew his whiskey. We'll all definitely be going back and recommending it to other friends. – Lisa, Urbanspoon
  • We had the most fantastic time at Alu….I'll be back… – lgotoeat, Citysearch
