Always Cheer Company
For former university cheerleader, Mika A. Terry, the art of the cheer goes well beyond pom-poms and rah-rahs. That's why she founded the Always Cheer Company: to teach students ages 8–17 not only the mechanics of the sport, but "self-esteem while encouraging them to dream." Thus, the company's aptly named "Totally-Esteemed" camp covers all angles of the craft, from the mental to the physical. In "Cheer it All," for example, students boost their confidence by creating cheers for their favorite things in life, while cheerleading yoga classes combine jumps and splits with asana and proper breathing.
After numerous workshops where students learn how to tumble, execute stunts, and embrace themselves as human beings, the camp concludes with a "Bring It On" session, in which cheerleaders show off their newfound skills in mini-competitions.
