What You'll Get
Many quilts tell stories, but only the finest quilts tell stories about characters who aren't perfect quadrilaterals. Tell your own tale with today’s Groupon: for $30, you get an introductory class at Always Quilting & Sewing Center in San Mateo (up to a $75 value). Introductory classes include:
During the Always Quilting & Sewing Center's beginning quilting course, Melissa Hero guides needle neophytes toward the completion of a small lap quilt or wall hanging. Students start with fabric selection, then pick up such techniques as rotary cuts, strip pieces, and finishing maneuvers such as bordering, binding, roundhouse bastes, and body slams. Melissa also teaches the Beyond the Basics course, in which students create 12 blocks, using different skills for each, before piecing them all together with sashing and cornerstones, ending up with a 54.5" x 68.5" sampler quilt. Susan Hans instructs the Beginning Sewing class, imparting insights into tools, patterns, construction, fit, and recreational uses for thimbles. While the Beginning Sewing class does not require extra supplies, quilting students must provide each item from the Beginning Quilting supply list and the Beyond the Basics supply list, many of which are available at the center's store.

About Always Quilting & Sewing Center
When Kit Morse took a sewing class in high school, she was certain never would again—she hated everything about sewing, especially the sewing part. But when her near-and-dear baby blanket needed mending, Morse took up a needle and thread. When she started making something beautiful to be proud of, she saw the art form in a whole new light, and fell in love with the hobby's meditative nature.
Morse opened Always Quilting & Sewing Center to create a sanctuary for people who shared a love of the craft—where they could take classes, share wisdom, and stock up on necessary tools. The vast inventory includes everything from batik fabrics to thimbles and even completed quilts.
