Presented by Jay Company Comics, the second annual iteration of the Amazing Arizona Comic Con canvasses the Mesa Convention Center with more than 100 comic-minded exhibitors and artists. Robert Kirkman, creator and writer of The Walking Dead and producer of its Golden Globe–nominated TV series presides over all things zombie on Saturday, from the morning’s Opening Ceremony to the 5 p.m. Ultimate Zombie Showdown, judging the cosplay (costume play) competition on criteria such as originality, fiendishness, and breathability. Kirkman is joined by Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld to promote their new sci-fi adventure The Infinite, and other highlighted authors and artists include DCAU’s Jeph Loeb and Superman writer-colorist Brian Buccellato. Autograph sessions let participants collect featured guests’ John Hancocks across the contents of their swag bag, which bequeaths attendees with collector’s edition covers of The Infinite, a mix of other comic books, and +2 charisma for the entire weekend.
A host of costumed groups swing through the premises, representing various comic factions including the Marvel-centric Arizona Avengers, the GC5, which embodies Gotham’s heroes and villains, and Darth Vader’s ever-marching vanguard, the 501st Legion. Tykes can meet Disney Channel and Cartoon Network ingénues on Kids’ Day—Sunday, January 9—whereas Magic: The Gathering hotshots compete in the Grand Prix competition to win a bid to the national championship tournament.
