The bluesy, darkly comic musical The Unfortunates makes its mad, magical way to ACT's Strand Theater in San Francisco. Big Joe, a prisoner with oversized hands facing an uncertain end, finds himself navigating a murky dream world of prostitutes, cabaret performers, street walkers and freaks. Confronting a series of enemies, he must risk everything to save the armless courtesan Rae from a plague that has decimated all but a handful of survivors. His fevered journey is marked by a medley of great American music traditions, heated from the fires of gospel, cooled by the sweet sorrow of the blues.
Running time is one hour and 29 minutes, with no intermission.
