Jump to: What’s That Sound?

Today’s Groupon injects your spirit with a lively dose of moral merriment and visual radio. Choose from seven featured showtimes and catch It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play at the American Heartland Theatre at up to 57% off the regular price, depending on which date you choose.

Watch the iconic story come to life as Southern California native and rising star Tim Scott steps into the tony George Bailey role. Set in the auditorium of Studio 4 at WDAF in Kansas City on Christmas Eve, 1946, the classic drama explores the importance of the individual and the true meaning of Christmas. This adaption features musical selections by the company and radio effects by Kenny Remmert.

Most people have only seen the original black-and-white teleplay starring Johnny Cash. Get in on this chance to see a full-color interpretation of this Christmas classic. The intimate and inviting American Heartland Theatre provides the perfect backdrop for an on-stage adaption of one of AFI’s Most Inspiring Films of All Time. This Groupon is great for restoring hope in your former professional soccer coach nephew, introducing the story to your black-and-white-film-scoffing nephew, or reminding your family what it looks like to work in radio.

What’s That Sound?

One of the most fun parts of watching a live radio play is seeing the creation of live, old-timey sound effects made by master foley artists. Here are some distinctive sounds and how they are recreated live:

  • A horse galloping: A live horse clops around. Later, the horse can be insulted because a crying horse sounds like violins.
  • Thunder and lightning: Exploding grenades simulate thunder, and a comb run across a bird’s plume creates the sound of lightning.
  • Gunshots: A snare drum filled with bullets is lowered hundreds of feet down into a studio water tank until the pressure causes it to explode.
  • Creaky Door: Hundreds of beetles are secured in a pillowcase placed on a seesaw. On the other side, the heavy breath of a sleepy dog causes the middle to creak.
